BREAKFREE JOURNEY GOES TREKKING TO KARNALA FORT

Karnala fort is situated about 20 Km south of Panvel situated in the middle of Karnala bird sanctuary. Selected students from FYBMS and SYBMS along with Prof. Sachin Pimple & Prof. Aanchal Jain started off on 26th August on 2013, quite early in the morning, and reached the fort around 01.30pm. The scenery was breath taking well worth the climb up. As it was just at the end of the rainy season, the climb through the jungle was very humid, but on reaching the ridge it was quite cool and a little misty in places, but nothing that posed a hazard. Upon reaching the summit and the Fort the climate was a lot cooler. Having explored, for what there is to explore, it was time to have lunch, which was heartily devoured. But important to be aware of the monkeys at this point. The climb/trek/walk down was equally enjoyable.

Jungle in city: Sanjay Gandhi National Park Biodiversity,

Nature education, Nature conservation, Sustainable development are today’s buzzwords. Our country has a treasure of natural resources, most of which are over utilized and destroyed e.g. mangroves; or under-utilized - such as plants which can be used as medicine. Before it’s too late, we need to take measures to save this wealth of our mother land, our natural resources. One of the easiest ways to do so, is to educate young minds at an early stage. If we inculcate the values and importance of nature in young minds, while they are receptive, fresh and unpolluted, we would achieve this goal. Keeping this thought in mind Envo-Venture club decided to take this endeavor of educating young minds. A field trip to Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Mumbai was organized for the BMS students on 22nd February, 2014. The students along with the concerned faculty were guided by Mr. Godambe, a Research fellow in botany who explained about all species of trees available in the National Park. He also shared unique characteristics of various species and told the students that Mumbai has an unique distinction of having a national park in the middle of an urban settlement. Students were further informed about false leaves & real leaves, extracting colour from leaves of trees etc. Students also visited tribal temple of God Tiger, tribal communities have faith that worshipping here can save them from tiger’s attack. Students were also informed about Lake Ecosystem in the Park. He also interacted with students and asked many questions on the importance of biodiversity. The students answered very well. Overall it was a wonderful experience for all to be so close to the nature and to learn the importance of different plants and animals for our environment.
